Little Known Anime from the 1980s

Many people began their anime fandom in an era when Naruto, Bleach, Dragonball Z and Fullmetal Alchemist was on air, or several seasons after that. However, anime started much earlier with styles that were very different from today's polished computer made products. 

Much of the 1980s anime focused on Mecha, which is a genre with large mechanical robots dominating the storyline. On the other end of the spectrum was sweet and innocent romance stories for young women.

1. Barefoot Gen

One of the more sobering offerings of the 80s, Barefoot Gen is the story of a young boy surviving the aftermath of the Hiroshima nuclear bombing.

2. Yawara! Fashionable Judo Girl

Yawara is a teenager wanting a normal life, but her grandfather has trained her in the art of Judo. She's very talented and even got to represent Japan in the Olympics. However, she still struggles with the fact that she dislikes the sport.

Kyosuke Kasuga was born with supernatural powers and his family has been moving constantly to hide this fact. His life changes when he moves for the seventh time and gets entangled in a love triangle with two best friends.

In a post apocalyptic Japan, Kenshiro tries to survive and encounters many nemesis that he defeats and overcomes with masculine strength.
