Nostalgic Movies to Watch This Chinese New Year

Every Chinese New Year is characterized by several things; good food, family and definitely good entertainment. One of the common family rituals this time of the year is to gather around the TV watching Stephen Chow or Jackie Chan movies while munching away on cookies and other tit bits.

If you're at a loss to choose what to watch for this year's CNY celebrations, here's a list that will help you. Most of these movies are from the 80s and 90s, which will help bring back some good old memories. This is also your chance to expose the little ones to some CNY classics:

1) Aces Go Places (1982)

Starring Sam Hui and Sylvia Chang, this Eric Tsang directed comedy is about a thief who helps the police crack a case. Full of slapstick comedy, this movie is just good fun for the whole family.

2. Alls Well that Ends Well (1992)

This story of three hopeless brothers and their love lives stars the late Leslie Cheung and comedy king Stephen Chow. As the title suggests, it's a family drama where lessons are learnt and everything settles down nicely in the end.

3. Ip Man series 

Ip Man tells the story of a martial arts master of the same name, and how he struggles to defend and develop his special martial arts style

4. Kung Fu Hustle (2004)

Two thugs hired to terrorize the inhabitants of a residential complex convert and become the complex landlord and landlady's student instead, and help defend them from the evil Axe gang.

5. God of Gamblers ( 1989)

Chow Yun Fatt makes this series a heart-stopping one to watch, as he stealthily pulls a poker face while winning card game after card game.

6. God of Cookery (1996)

Watch as Stephen Chow cooks up a storm in this movie where there are plenty of culinary creations that will make you salivate
