Why ' Made In Abyss' is Shaping Up to be The Best Anime of 2017

To be honest, when I watched the first episode of 'Made in Abyss' I thought it was another attempt at having a slice of life anime with lots of cuteness but no real substance. The series really surprised me and turned me into a fan within just a few episodes.

So if you haven't heard of Made in Abyss, it's about a mysterious town built around an even more mysterious deep giant hole. Many of the town's residents work as Cave Raiders who descend into this hole, known as 'The Abyss' to gather artifacts that are valuable in their universe.

The story is told from the point of view of Riko, a junior Cave Raider who's determined to get to the bottom of The Abyss to search for her mother. She's assisted in her quest by Reg, a half human, half robot being whose hand is a deadly weapon.

It's Not Just A Fantasy Adventure

Along the way, the secrets of The Abyss are slowly revealed. However, far from being just about Riko and Reg's journey, the story is able to elicit deep emotions in viewers. At the top of the Abyss, things seem cheerful and normal, but as they descend into its depths, characters and situations become darker and more sinister.

The rules of the Abyss are such that it's divided into several levels, and the deeper you go, the more difficult it is to go back up. Cave Raiders often fall sick with dizziness, vomiting and fainting when they try to ascend, and this is called the Curse of the Abyss

The Curse causes even worse effects deeper in the Abyss, where Riko and Reg meet Nanachi, who has been turned into a Hollow ( a mutated being) after being subjected to experiments about the The Curse.

The story of Nanachi and her friend Mitty are probably among the most heart wrenching in the series, and forms the real climax of season 1.

An Amazing Soundtrack

From the upbeat opening to the trailer's background music, the soundtrack for Made in Abyss is really something else as it has an uncanny ability to elicit specific emotions in viewers.

A solid storyline, mature renditions of concepts and a hint of mystery is really what makes Made in Abyss a standout series for 2017
